Subject and Association DescriptionBickford’s began in 1840 when chemist William Bickford opened Adelaide’s first chemist shop, supplying essential medicines to the growing colony. After his death in 1850, his wife, Ann Margaret Bickford, took over and expanded the business and took it into new markets, eventually forming A. M. Bickford & Sons with their children. As well as selling pharmaceuticals, Bickford’s started manufacturing cordials and in 1874 began producing aerate beverages. In 1930, it merged with other pharmaceutical firms to form Drug Houses of Australia, while its well-known cordials and beverages continued under the Bickford’s name. Though no longer in pharmaceuticals, Bickford’s remains a well-known Australian brand.
