Name/TitleEquipment: Mayer & Meltzer Sphygmograph
About this objectMayer & Meltzer Sphygmograph:
Wrist strapped pulse recorder that traces the arterial pulse on smoked paper.
The device was designed to be strapped to the inside of a patient’s wrist, with the curved disc on the base of the sphygmograph pressed onto the skin. The stylus would then record the rhythmic rise and fall of the pulse as a continuous wavy line. This provided early visual evidence of heart and vascular function before the development of electrocardiography.
